This is the second of two modules that look at Christian doctrine and looks at salvation, the church and eschatology (our Christian hope). The first module covered doctrines of God, humanity and Christ.

There are lots of great reasons to study Christian doctrine. Doctrine is simply a summary of what the Bible teaches as that has been understood by God’s people over the centuries. Scripture interprets Scripture, so grasping the big picture of what the Bible teaches helps us make sense of individual passages.An understanding of doctrine provides a wider viewpoint that puts the latest fad in a bigger perspective, saving us from being swept along with every new trend or emphasis, or getting blown off course when we’re hit by the storms of life. And doctrine means understanding God the Father, Son and Spirit, along with God’s glorious majesty, his loving purposes, his saving activity and the glorious hope that he promises us. Who wouldn’t want to know more about these things? Good doctrine leads to passionate praise.

Acknowledgments

Charles Hodge was the Principal of Princeton Theological Seminary in the nineteenth century and famously said: “A new idea never originated at Princeton Seminary.” That is the way it should be in matters of Christian doctrine. All doctrine must be established from Scripture and situated in the rich theological history of the Church. That is what we have attempted in these modules on Christian doctrine and it is right to acknowledge the giants on whose shoulders we stand. Ralph’s thinking on these matters has been particularly influenced by John Calvin, Francis Turretin and John Murray in the past and by Bob Letham, Robert Reymond, Sinclair Ferguson and Wayne Grudem in the present.
